What is the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme?

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) provides grants for public sector bodies to fund energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation measures in public sector buildings such as schools, NHS hospitals and council buildings.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) launched Phase one of the PSDS in autumn 2020 with a £1 billion grant fund to support the development of energy efficient and heat decarbonisation projects.

Further phases have been completed since the original £1bn fund and the next phase of PSDS opens in September 2023. As with all previous phases, this will be run on a first come first served basis with the fund closing when applications have exceeded the amount in the fund. This makes it vital that public sector organisations ready to take that step to a low carbon heating future put a plan in place as early as possible in order to be fully prepared to submit their application as soon as the fund opens.

At Eddisons we have successfully supported many organisations with Salix-funded projects, from initial application through to project delivery. Contact us to discuss how we can assist with submitting your PSDS application this year.

The public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is a £1bn grant fund aimed at helping public sector bodies fund energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation projects. It is part of the Chancellor’s ‘Plan for Jobs 2020’ undertaking to support recovery from COVID-19 in the UK economy.

The scheme supports the government’s net zero goals and is managed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) delivery body Salix Finance.

Which public sector bodies can apply for the PSDS?

The public sector bodies listed below can apply for PSDS funding:

  • Central government departments and non-departmental public bodies
  • For central government departments where their roles are reserved, funding may be used for estates located within the UK.
  • Emergency services
  • Institutions of further and higher education
  • Local authorities
  • Maintained schools within the state education system, including academies, Multi-Academy Trusts and free schools
  • Nursery schools maintained by a local authority
