Secured £850k+ CIF Funding with Lead Design, Contract Administration and Cost Management.Adam Finch

After numerous attempts to secure capital funding from the ESFA to replace their single glazed Curtain Walling System without success, Joseph Swan Academy approached Eddisons for CIF application assistance in October 2017.

Our client’s objective was to apply for and secure capital funding of £800,000.00 to refurbish their existing Curtain Walling system to improve the thermal performance; aesthetics and Health and Safety of the academy building.

Given the age of the building (1960’s) licensed asbestos material was known to be present which would create a serious Health and Safety matter during the construction phase

Eddisons applied for and secured funding based on fixed contractor costs, and included an in depth programme of works and risk register on how the project would be delivered safely and successfully.

Eddisons were approached by the academy following recommendations from other academies in the area.

After successfully obtaining in excess of £800,000.00 to finance the refurbishment works, Eddisons were appointed to undertake the role of Lead Designer, Principal Designer and Contract Administrator.

Given the nature of the works, the Head Teacher requested works commence shortly before the summer holiday period. This would result in the procurement of a contractor and materials within 12 weeks which was a difficult task to achieve. However, our Building and Project Consultancy team provided procurement options for the academy to consider based on professional experience and a commencement date prior to the summer holidays was achieved.

During the works, unforeseen licensed asbestos was found in a number of areas. This created a logistical issue on site but was professionally and swiftly dealt with following guidance from our education team, much to the delight of our client.

All work was undertaken in a live academic environment which accommodates 1600 pupils. The programming of the works, phasing and H&S considerations needed to be professionally and carefully managed which Eddisons.

Works completed on time despite a number of unforeseen issues arising on site.

The successful delivery of the project provided the academy with a modern, thermally efficient and safe academic building in which to work and learn.

The academy no longer needs their heating system to operate throughout the day to maintain a comfortable internal temperature. This has resulted in the academy making annual savings on their utility costs, expenditure of which can be reinvested into other areas of the academy.

The client, pupils and parents are all delighted with the final results.
