Building Skills for a Successful Future

Apprenticeships offer a dynamic pathway to obtain a qualification while gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the workplace. The positive trend in the surveying industry is evident, with a 30% increase in young people aged 18-30 qualifying as Chartered or Associate Surveyors from 2013 to 2019, according to RICS. And with a range of disciplines and types of apprenticeships available means there are options available to suit a diverse range of people.

Types of Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships come in various forms globally, so it’s crucial to select one aligning with your skills and career aspirations. Depending on the chosen apprenticeship, a qualification can take anywhere from one to six years. Throughout this period, apprentices receive a salary, holiday leave, and dedicated study time. As well as gaining valuable, hands-on experience, apprentices receive on and off-the-job training that can lead to membership of RICS.

Non-degree surveying apprenticeships, also known as intermediate and advanced apprenticeships, provide an excellent opportunity to enter the surveying industry without pursuing full-time classroom learning.

For those aspiring to gain a surveying degree alongside work experience, degree apprenticeships offer a hybrid model. Combining full-time paid work with part-time university study, these apprenticeships typically take three to six years to complete. This type of apprenticeship offers degree-level study whilst gaining a head-start in a surveying career. On successful completion, apprentices will receive a full bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Key Benefits of Apprenticeships

  • Practical Experience

Apprentices benefit from hands-on learning so they’re able to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world situations.

  • Professional Development

Apprenticeships follow a structured pathway, fostering technical expertise, professional competence, and industry connections.

  • Transferable Skills

The training received is tailored to the needs of the industry but also teaches the essential skills needed to progress in the workplace and wider working world.

  • Earn While You Learn

Apprentices receive a salary for their work and study, providing an income stream immediately after compulsory education. Allowing financial independency for apprentices with no student debt or tuition fees to pay.

  • Work Experience

With years of relevant work experience in the surveying field, apprentices get ahead of the competition quickly.

  • Industry Connections

Networking opportunities within the industry are abundant, allowing apprentices to build relationships with experienced professionals. The RICS Matrics groups exemplify early-career networking for surveyors, offering valuable community benefits.

The Future of Apprenticeships

Employer partnerships in the future are likely to involve a more strategic approach to talent acquisition. Companies may collaborate with educational institutions to identify and groom potential talent early on, ensuring a skilled workforce aligned with industry needs. By shaping the training programs, employers can ensure that apprentices graduate with the specific skills required for the industry.

The integration of technology in training is likely to be a key trend for years to come. Employer partnerships may focus on incorporating digital tools, simulations, and virtual reality to enhance the learning experience, particularly for technical and hands-on skills.

Since Covid-19, apprenticeships have seen a rise in remote learning, meaning employer partnerships may extend beyond national borders. Companies could collaborate internationally to access a diverse talent pool and offer apprentices exposure to different markets and practices, whilst benefiting from an almost limitless pot of talent.
