Lewis Evans completes surveying Degree Apprenticeship

Lewis Evans, a building surveyor in our Leeds Building and Project Consultancy team, has completed the Level 7 Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship, specialising in the Building Surveying pathway, through the University of the Built Environment.

The apprenticeship ran over two years, studied alongside his full-time role at the firm, and combined postgraduate academic study with practical workplace experience across building surveying and project work.

Changing lanes into the surveying profession

Lewis joined BTG Eddisons after completing a BA in Architecture at Newcastle University, before moving into building surveying and taking the apprenticeship route to chartered status rather than a conventional postgraduate course. Throughout the programme he was supported by Joe Fitzsimmons, Ian Harrington and the wider Building and Project Consultancy team in Leeds, who provided the workplace experience the qualification is built around.

Apprenticeships as a route into the built environment

Degree apprenticeships of this kind are becoming a more established way into chartered surveying, allowing candidates to earn a salary whilst working towards postgraduate-level qualifications, rather than choosing between full-time study and full-time employment.

For a sector that continues to report skills shortages, particularly in building surveying and project consultancy, the model gives firms a way to train talent internally whilst giving apprentices direct exposure to live projects from an early stage. Lewis's own path, from an architecture degree into building surveying via the apprenticeship route, is a reminder that the built environment does not require a single, fixed entry point.
