Two years ago, Professor Kamila Hawthorne (Chair of the Royal College of GPs) claimed that the UK’s general practice is understaffed, underfunded and overstretched. In 2025, the outlook for the sector remains largely the same, with some professional bodies claiming that the current funding plans fail to meet the demand of GPs.
However, the government’s new cash injection should help to ease some pressures for employees within this healthcare space while making the patient experience significantly better.
Our guide takes a closer look at the funding, how it can be used and how it will transform this vital industry. Continue reading to learn more.
What was announced?
The government has announced £102 million of funding for general practices up and down the country. GPs will be able to use the capital to modernise facilities by making bricks and mortar upgrades.
It has been introduced following years of neglect and represents the largest investment in GP facilities for five years. Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, had this to say about it:
“It will be a long road, but this government is putting in the work to fix our NHS and make it fit for the future.
“These are simple fixes for our GP surgeries but for too long they were left to ruin, allowing waiting lists to build and stopping doctors treating more patients.
“It is only because of the necessary decisions we took in the Budget that we are able to invest in GP surgeries, start tackling the 8am scramble and deliver better services for patients. The extra investment and reform this government is making, as part of its Plan for Change, will transform our NHS so it can once again be there for you when you need it.”
How will it improve UK general practices?
It is believed that this fund will improve patient, doctor, nurse and support staff experiences in several ways, such as:
- More than 1,000 GP surgeries will be able to create additional space, improving care services and boosting productivity
- Over 8.3 million more appointments will be available annually
What can the £102 million be spent on?
At the time of writing, the government has suggested that funding can be used to create new consultation and treatment rooms to allow patients to be seen faster. However, there will be many other uses for the capital – as long as they contribute to the goal of modernising facilities.
