Renewable Energy Becomes the World’s Leading Electricity Source

07/10/2025

News

Renewable energy officially overtook coal as the number one source of electricity globally in the first half of 2025, a historic achievement marking a positive shift in the fight against climate change.

The data comes from the global energy think tank Ember’s mid-year insights, which found that solar and wind power specifically exceeded the worldwide demand growth for the period. This has no doubt contributed to the 0.6% drop in coal generation.

As Decarbonisation specialists, Eddisons is delighted with this report and is confident our important work has played its part. Our head of Sustainability and Decarbonisation, Nazar Soofi, had this to say about the news:

“This is a pivotal moment for global energy. Renewable sources overtaking coal proves the transition to cleaner power is well underway. We must now build on this and continue to incorporate green energy solutions into as many industries as possible.”

The next steps for individuals, business owners or organisation leaders are to ensure we all turn to renewable energy sources where possible. Eddisons can assist with project management tasks and capital grant applications when you are ready to make a sustainable change. Use the form below to discuss your requirements with our experts.
