Toilet refurbishment in Trinity Leeds

Project

BTG Eddisons was appointed by Landsec to undertake the refurbishment of the public toilet facilities within Trinity Leeds shopping centre. As the largest publicly accessible toilet provision in the city centre, the facility receives very high footfall and needed an upgrade to improve functionality, accessibility and user experience.

Initially commissioned to carry out a feasibility study, BTG Eddisons reviewed the existing layout and condition of the facilities, identifying operational shortcomings and opportunities to modernise the space.

Following this stage, BTG Eddisons was retained to provide architectural design, specification writing and contract administration services for the full refurbishment programme.

Approach

The refurbishment covered the corridor lobby, male and female toilets, accessible facilities, an adult hygiene suite, parent and child areas, and baby changing and feeding rooms.

Throughout the design process, BTG Eddisons worked closely with Landsec and shopping centre stakeholders to develop a practical solution tailored to the demands of a busy retail environment.

Maintaining operational toilet provision throughout the works was a key requirement. To achieve this, BTG Eddisons developed a carefully coordinated five-phase construction programme, ensuring sections of the facility remained open at all times and minimising disruption to visitors.

To further reduce the impact on the shopping centre and its tenants, the works were split into specialist packages at tender stage. High-disruption activities, including strip-out works, were scheduled outside normal trading hours wherever possible.

Results

The £1.9m refurbishment project was successfully delivered over a 25-week programme with minimal disruption to shopping centre operations. The completed facilities now provide a modern, inclusive and efficient environment that better reflects the expectations of a high-footfall city centre destination.

The collaborative approach between BTG Eddisons, Landsec and centre stakeholders ensured the project was delivered smoothly, receiving positive feedback from both users and operational teams following completion.
