BTG Eddisons Case Study Hattersley Retail Park

Highway design for Hattersley Retail Park

Project

BTG Eddisons was appointed by Eric Wright Group to deliver the detailed design for off-site highway works supporting the Hattersley Retail Park development on Stockport Road, Tameside. The scheme forms part of a wider regeneration initiative, creating a modern retail and trade destination while improving connectivity and infrastructure in the area.

The proposed development includes retail units, a food store, light industrial space and a drive-thru restaurant, alongside parking and sustainable transport provision. A key challenge was ensuring the surrounding highway network could safely accommodate increased traffic while promoting accessible and sustainable travel options.

Approach

Our Transport Planning and Design team provided full detailed designs for the off-site highway improvements required to support the scheme. This included the introduction of a new vehicular access junction from the A560, alongside enhanced pedestrian and cycle routes to encourage active travel.

A new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing was incorporated to improve safety, whilst upgrades to the existing bus stop layby enhanced public transport accessibility. Wider public realm improvements and footway upgrades were also designed to create safe, inclusive access for all members of the public.

Throughout the process, BTG Eddisons worked closely with the wider project team to ensure the proposals integrated seamlessly with the existing transport network, balancing operational efficiency with long-term sustainability objectives.

Results

The completed scheme will deliver 57,000 sq ft of high-quality retail and trade park, providing modern facilities for the local community and supporting ongoing regeneration in Hattersley.

With new employment opportunities, improved transport infrastructure and sustainable design features including 179 car parking spaces, EV charging and solar integration, the development will generate lasting economic and environmental benefits.

Designs provided by our transport planning and design team ensure the site is accessible, efficient and future-ready, supporting both occupiers and the wider community.
