Project
The Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust appointed BTG Eddisons to provide building consultancy services at Holy Family & St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Pontefract.
The project focused on transforming the school’s tired early years play and learning space while addressing a significant surface water flood risk. With a budget of approximately £58,000 and works required to be completed during the summer holidays, careful planning and programme management were essential.
Approach
BTG Eddisons worked closely with the Trust and school to develop the brief and ensure the proposals met the needs of pupils and staff. Rather than creating a new early years’ space, investigations confirmed the existing canopy could be retained and refurbished, providing better value within the available budget.
The original two schemes were also combined into a single project, allowing a general contractor to deliver the works and maximising value for the Trust.
BTG Eddisons provided architectural design, principal designer and contract administrator services, alongside tender management, contractor procurement advice and regular site inspections. A specialist drainage survey was undertaken before a new surface water drainage system was installed to divert rainwater away from the school building.
The existing early years canopy was refurbished with new heating, artificial turf and specialist play equipment, creating a space suitable for year-round use.
Results
The project was completed within the compressed summer holiday programme and ready for occupation in September 2026.
The school now benefits from a modern, fit-for-purpose early years environment, while the new drainage system has significantly reduced the identified flood risk.
The Trust described the service as “prompt, professional, thorough and first class”, highlighting that the completed project exceeded expectations while remaining within the original budget.
The brief was complex, to remove a flood risk to an entire school at the same time as redevelop the outdoor area for our youngest pupils from a dated, tired play space to a fresh, exciting and enjoyable play and learning space. Working together and with input from school staff, the final product is far better than
expected, and importantly it is within the budget initially set.
I have worked with many surveyors in the last 10 years and Ronnie is by far the best at what he does. He takes time to understand the projects and then cares about making sure they are successful.
