Project
In 2020, North Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust approached Eddisons’ Lincoln team with a significant challenge: to survey 4,700 windows across three operational hospital sites: Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital; Scunthorpe General Hospital; and Goole and District Hospital.
The priority was to ensure full compliance with the Department of Health’s safety standards, without disrupting any of the hospitals’ operations that see over 135,000 A&E attendances annually.
Approach
Eddisons developed a detailed survey programme, which aligned with HBN 00-10 Part D guidelines and ensured each window was checked for compliance with current health and safety standards. Working closely with NHS staff at all three live sites, the team maintained daily communication with Trust representatives to coordinate safe and non-intrusive access, particularly in sensitive clinical areas.
All findings were captured in a centralised, searchable schedule. This allowed the Trust to filter and prioritise required works across their estate, supporting a clear and actionable maintenance strategy.
Despite undertaking the survey during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team successfully navigated logistical challenges through strong site coordination, flexibility, and stringent safety protocols.
Results
The project was delivered efficiently and without disruption to hospital services. The Trust now has a complete and categorised window compliance register, ensuring it can respond proactively to safety requirements.
The successful delivery of this complex, live-site survey—amid national lockdowns—demonstrates Eddisons’ ability to deliver high-stakes, high-volume work in sensitive healthcare environments with minimal operational impact.
The team worked really well with the Capital Projects Team and the Clinical Team to ensure that no Clinical Services were affected by the window survey. The survey covers every item detailed within the Health Building Note’s criteria and creates a full list that includes all necessary replacements and repairs.
