The Building & Projects Consultancy team from leading surveying firm Eddisons, will be exhibiting at The Academies Show 2017. In advance of next week’s show, Ian Harrington (National Head - Building & Project Consultancy at Eddisons) shares his experience from last year and outlines developments that academies should be aware of.
Is this your first year at the Academies Show?
No, we exhibited at last year’s event for the first time and the response was fantastic; we secured more £5m in capital funding for clients. Some of the projects we took on off the back of that event have already been delivered; over the summer we completely redesigned a teaching block at an academy in County Durham, fitting new windows and curtain walling while incorporating the school colours and it looks great. They’re really pleased with the results.
Why did you decide to exhibit at the Academies Show 2017?
The education sector is really important to us, as we know how hard accessing funding can be for academies – especially against a backdrop of ongoing austerity. This event helps us to meet a number of academies and show them what can be achieved with very little effort on their part.
For me, it’s really rewarding when we show how we can provide a solution to an issue and help academies access funding to complete a project that can transform their school. We’ve seen how it affects the overall atmosphere at a school and the smiles on the pupils' faces.
What key developments should clients be aware of?
The deadline for CIF (Condition Improvement Fund) applications is fast approaching, as they are due in on 14th December, although we are still assisting clients with bid preparations. We’re on track to triple the applications from last year and we’re looking to maintain or improve on our high success rate of 85%.
We have also seen a positive response to the Government’s SEEF (Salix Energy Efficiency Fund) and HPCF (Healthy Pupils Capital Fund) initiatives, so we are looking forward to secure funding for some exciting projects that will help pupils become healthier and make the school buildings more efficient.
What are you looking forward to at the Academies Show 2017?
In short: meeting people. This exhibition enables us to hear first-hand about the issues that matter most to academies, and we can learn from business managers and other staff the challenges they face that we can ultimately help them with.
You will be joined by Sports Funding. Why is that?
I and a few of the Eddisons chartered surveying team will be at stand B28 and, as you say, will be joined by Peter McCabe of Sports Funding. The partnership with Sports Funding enables us to assist academies with a wider range of projects, as Sports Funding specialises in working with Sports Clubs and Education providers to secure funding for sport-specific projects.
If you have any projects or ideas you would like to talk through, Ian and members of the Eddisons chartered surveying team will be available at stand B28 on the day. There will also be a free draw at the stand to win £100 of book vouchers.
